Collaborative Robots – the Future ‘Helping Hand’

Who doesn’t appreciate a helping hand? Who wouldn’t appreciate a Cost-effective, flexible, safe, and easy-to-use helping hand? Collaborative robots (cobots) are just the ticket to give your business greater control and a higher competitive advantage. You don’t have to worry about a robot calling in sick, quitting without notice, getting bored or injured, or taking its 2nd paternity leave this year.

Universal Robots is a company that creates robotic arms for businesses of every size, all over the world. These robot are safe, flexible, and easy-to-use 6-axis industrial arms. They develop industrial collaborative robots that automate and streamline repetitive industrial processes. This approach enables production departments to assign staff members to more enjoyable tasks – So say hello to jobs that provide you and your coworkers with new challenges and add value to the company.

What Does Collaborative Robot Mean?

The definition of collaboration in this case is: The action of working with someone/ something to produce or create a final product. This is the exact purpose that Universal Robots aim to achieve with their collaborative robots. However, people must not mistake the purpose or use of the robot with its functionality. These cobots have a vast array of functionality that depends on their setting, more precisely where it works.

Well, how does it work?

Simply put, according the international standards ISO 10218 part 1 and part 2, there are four types of collaborative features for robots

  1. Hand Guiding- This type of collaborative application is used for hand guiding or path teaching. The machine mirrors and stored the data for the hand guided movement and can be able to repeat the same movements of needed. So if you want to teach paths quickly for pick and place applications without having to jog anyone’s memory for instance, you might use this type of application.
  2. Safety Monitored Stop-This is basically a safety net in which the robots and employees can coexist safely in the work environment. It affects how a person can work on a task and still be in the robot’s space. If the human enters the restricted area in the pre-determined safety zone, the robot will stop all movement altogether. No more awkward bumps with colleagues or safety threatening mishaps.
  3. Speed and Separation Monitoring – This feature cuts the cost of having to cage the machine and greatly reduces the risk of work related injuries. When an employee is in the designated safety zone, the robot will respond with its assigned speeds (generally slow down) and stop when the worker comes too close.
  4. Power and Force Limiting- This is a program that allows the cobots to detect when abnormal forces are applied while they are working. In these situations they are programmed to either stop or move away from the force therefore cancelling out the initial contact.

Perfect, we have established the benefits and safety protocols of cobots, but how will I know how to use them? Although cobots are fairly easy to program, fast to set up with flexible deployment, Universal Robots has provided a training schedule that will make you,

Become a robot programmer in only 87 minutes

The easy online training modules are built to deliver hands-on learning via interactive simulations to maximize your engagement. The free online training is available in these languages: English, Spanish, German, French, Chinese, Korean, and Japanese.

Robotics and artificial intelligence is a topic that most Leigh men find controversial. Universal Robots have proven that these machines are here only to serve. This is the new age of technology that makes our life easier. Cobots gives purpose to our lives by doing the redundant, less exciting jobs. Now the box packer can follow their heart and become a musician or anything they so choose.
